How to Repair a Side-View Mirror
- 1). Open the door with the damaged mirror and position the window in the down position. For powered windows and/or mirror models, turn the ignition key to the "off" position and remove the keys from the ignition.
- 2). Use the angled trim panel pry tool to unsnap the side-view mirror trim sail located on the interior side of the door panel opposite from the mirror. On some GM models and other cars, the trim sail is actually molded to the interior door panel and eliminates this step (in which case, proceed to step 4 before applying step 3). Other models (some imports) may require removing a retaining screw from the trim sail with a screwdriver prior to unsnapping it.
- 3). Inspect the access hole in the door frame revealed by the removal of the trim sail. If applicable, pull the foam insulation out of the door frame to reveal the interior retaining nuts on the studs of the side-view mirror.
- 4). Inspect the interior door panel thoroughly. Locate all the retaining screws and bolts and remove them prior to removing the door panel. Different makes and models have different locations for the retaining screws, some which may be concealed for aesthetic purposes with small circular or rectangular plugs. These plugs simply pop out of most all of the door panels after using a pry tool or screwdriver to reveal the screws. Most commonly, a screw is located in the door handle bezel, beneath or inside the door pull cup area, and, in some cases, along the borders of the door panel. Powered windows and mirrors generally also require prying off the window/mirror control module (usually located on the arm rest) and almost always reveal another retaining screw under the module. Detach the wire-harness connections from under the module once removed, if applicable, and then remove all the panel retaining screws. Some door panels feature retaining screws attached to the door speaker; if applicable, remove the retaining screws from the speaker covers prior to removing the door panel.
- 5). Unseat the door handle bezel by prying it outward with the angled trim pry tool. Most all require releasing the internal door function rods from the bezel to remove it entirely from the door. This may be as simple as pulling the rod(s) up and or down from the molded retainers on the internal side of the bezel while others may require unsnapping retaining clips prior to removing the rods.
- 6). Use the window crank removal tool for manual-type windows. This thin-bladed pry tool is slipped under the door crank to forcibly unclip the window crank handle retaining clip. In most all applications, aligning the tool with the length of the handle will properly locate the tool-to-clip retention and unseat the clip. Be careful not to allow the clip to go flying off from underneath to prevent losing it. Pull the door crank off of the crank rod once the retaining clip has been removed.
- 7). Unsnap the internal door panel retention clips, if applicable; some models simply feature lifting upward on the door panel once the hardware and window crank handles have been removed, using the angled trim panel pry tool to unseat the internal snaps. In most all applicable models, the snaps are located around both sides and the bottom of the door panel.
- 8). Remove the door panel a few inches away from the door and disconnect any other wire harnesses that may be attached to electrical components underneath (powered mirrors, speakers) the door panel, including the wire connection for powered and/or heated side-view mirror connections, if applicable.
- 9). Remove the retaining nuts in the access hole of the door frame under the side-view mirror trim sail, using the ratchet and a socket.
- 10
Move to the outside of the exterior door frame and then pry the mirror and sealing gasket off of the door frame by hand. Pull the wire harness connection through the access hole of the door frame, if applicable. - 11
Install the replacement side-view mirror and seal gasket, door panel, window crank handle (if applicable) and side-view mirror trim sail, if applicable, by reversing the removal procedures. - 1). Remove the side-view mirror trim sail as illustrated in step 2 of section 1.
- 2). Remove the foam insulation from the door frame as illustrated in step 3 of section 1, if applicable.
- 3). Disconnect the powered mirror wire harness, if applicable.
- 4). Remove the retaining nuts from the studs of the side-view mirror and then replace with the new mirror by applying steps 10 and 11 of section 1 when applicable.
