Why Do Cats Groom Humans?
- When kittens are born, their very first experience involves being groomed by their mother. Cats also spend a great deal of time grooming themselves.
- Cats that live in households with other cats often groom each other as a sign of affection and a way to "get to know" one other better. The same is true when your cat grooms you.
- Sometimes you may notice your cat wants to groom you after you have participated in some form of exercise. This could be either because the cat knows you need a bath or because sweat is salty, and cats enjoy the flavor of it.
- When you pet your cat, the action is reminiscent to the cat of its mother grooming it as a kitten, so your cat will often return the favor by grooming you.
- Sometimes when you pet your cat, it may begin licking and gently biting your fingers. This is a sign of affection and playfulness.
