How to Make Towel Baby Bibs With Shirt Collars
- 1). Remove the collar from an old t-shirt or cut a 10 ½-by-3-inch piece of ribbing. Turn the ribbing over, so you are looking at the back. Fold it in half lengthwise, so your piece is 5 1/4-by-3 inches. Bring the 3-inch ends together and pin them. Sew them on your sewing machine so you have a large circle that will be the collar.
- 2). Fold the ribbing in half, so it is 10 ½-by-1 ½ inches. Fold it in half in the other direction to find the center of the ribbing at 5 ¼ inches and put a pin there. Measure 2 5/8 from each edge and place pins at each spot. Your ribbing should be marked in fourths.
- 3). Measure your towel from the back to 6 and 1/8 inches toward the front. Put a pin in the center of the towel at this mark. From this mark, measure 2 1/8 inch toward the back, and mark this place with a fabric marker and place a pin in the towel, 2 1/8 inches down the front. Mark this spot and place a pin here. Then measure 2 3/8 inches to the right of your center pin and mark it with fabric marker and a pin. Then measure the other direction 2 3/8 inches and mark it with a fabric marker and insert a stick pin. Your outer pins should have their pointy sides facing toward the center pin.
- 4). Draw a circle between all of your fabric markings, and cut this circle out. Position your pins so that they are still on the edges of the circle at these exact spots. This is the neck circle for your bib. It should have 4 inches of towel behind the neck, but the majority of it in the front, below the neckline.
- 5). Position the seam of your collar piece on the pin at the back of your circle. Remove the pin in the towel and stick the towel 1/8 to ¼-inch in between the folded piece of ribbing. The fold of the ribbing should be toward the neck circle you just cut out. Pin the back of the collar in place.
- 6). Match up the remaining pins at each side of the ribbing and towel and the front of the ribbing and the towel. Pin the collar piece on just as you did in the back, so the towel is sandwiched between the two edges of ribbing. Place pins about 1/2 to ¾ of an inch between your four main pins so the collar is secure on the towel.
- 7). Sew the edge of the ribbing on to the towel with a zig-zag or other decorative stitch. Stay along the edge of the ribbing, so it is secure. Do not sew over the tops of the pins, but remove them just before you come to them so your fabric stays in place.
- 8). Add decoration to the front of the bib. Add ribbon, embroidery, tie-dying or appliqués to personalize the bib.
