How to Quite Smoking

If you have tried to quit smoking, perhaps someone has suggested turning to dipping tobacco as an alternative to smoking. These people may have claimed that dip tobacco is not as dangerous as smoking. They may have shown you how to dip tobacco, and cited many good things about dip tobacco. But what they have probably failed to mention is that, just like smoking, there are many negative effects of dip tobacco.

It's not easy to let go of something that's been such an integral part of your life for so long. That little stick of tobacco has stuck with you through thick or thin, rain or shine, day or night. With minimal effort it has provided hours of comfort and activated the pleasure centers in your brain. No wonder the thought of quitting seems so daunting. Who wants to give up something that can temporarily make sadness, stress, and boredom evaporate into thin air? Just thinking about it can stop you in your tracks.

A variety of medications are used to help people quit smoking. However, in Canada only three types are widely available: nicotine chewing pieces, nicotine patches and bupropion (a pill originally developed to treat depression). Special medical clinics occasionally prescribe other specialized medicines such as clonodine and nortriptyline. Research suggests that, when used as directed and when combined with other behaviour programs (e.g., self-help, brief counselling, etc.), these medications dramatically increase the odds that a person will quit smoking.

The first type of method to naturally quit smoking is known as the cold turkey technique. Doctors and former smokers recommend this method to those who have just developed the habit, so if you have been using cigarettes for only a couple of months, this technique is appropriate for you. The origin of this term is not clearly determined; nevertheless, it is the universal way to describe a sudden and complete halt to the habit of a person.

The stop smoking hypnosis process used is a very natural process that many people find soothing and relaxing. Hypnosis helps you to get rid of the desire and cravings for cigarettes, not stops you from actually smoking. This means that at any time you want to start smoking you can if you choose. It is very rare for a person to decide to start smoking again, especially if the process is successful in helping you to stop smoking.

Why is it so hard to quit smoking?

Foremost, this is because most smokers become addicted to the nicotine contained in tobacco products. Nicotine has a deadly addictive power. When a person puffs a cigarette, nicotine particles find their way to the lungs through inhalation. From there, it is absorbed into the bloodstream just like the oxygen people breathe. It travels with the blood to the brain where it locks onto certain receptor areas. Dopamine is then released into the brain.

Smoking can also increase your risk for having a stroke, especially if you are a woman taking birth control pills. This combination can be deadly and should be stopped immediately if you are a woman over the age of thirty. Smoking also causes decreased circulation that can lead to blood clots, especially later in life. It can also increase diabetic symptoms in those suffering from the disease.
