    • 1). Turn the computer off and detach all external devices. Lay the computer face down and remove the battery and the media drive.

    • 2). Remove the single Phillips screw that secures the hard drive. The screw is located in the bottom of the computer along the right edge. Lift the hard drive bezel up and slide the drive out of its bay.

    • 3). Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the cover from the PCI compartment, located on the bottom of the computer, near the front edge. Disconnect the modem cable from its motherboard connector. Spread the metal retaining clips on the sides of the mini PCI card and pull the card out of its socket at a 45-degree angle.

    • 4). Remove the keyboard screw from the center of the computer's bottom. Turn the computer over and open the display. Slide the four tabs along the top edge of the keyboard toward the front of the computer to unlock them. Grasp the top edge of the keyboard and rotate it up and forward so it rests face down. Rotate the keyboard and pointing device cables' zero-insertion force connectors up to unlock them, and slide the cables out. Set the keyboard aside.

    • 5). Lift the rear edge of the memory expansion compartment cover and rotate it up and forward to access the TouchPad. Grasp the left edge of the TouchPad and lift it until it disengages from the top cover. Flip the TouchPad over so it's resting face down on the top cover. Disconnect the two TouchPad cables from the motherboard and remove the TouchPad.

    • 6). Rotate the computer so you are facing the rear panel. Remove the switch cover screw from the center of each hinge. Rotate the computer to face the front and open the display. Lift the switch cover to detach it from the top cover and slide it forward to access the speaker cables. Lift both speaker cables up to disconnect them from the motherboard, and remove the switch cover.

    • 7). Detach the display cable, inverter cable and display ground cable from the motherboard. To remove the ground cable, you will first need to remove the Phillips screw that secures it. Rotate the computer so you face the rear panel and close the display without engaging the latch. Remove the two hinge screws from the rear panel and lift the display straight up off the computer.

    • 8). Flip the computer over with the rear panel facing forward. Remove the nine screws that secure the top cover. There are three screws along the front edge, two screws along the top edge of the hard drive bay, two screws along the top edge of the media bay and one screw in each corner of the rear panel. Turn the computer over and remove the three top cover screws. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry up the rear edge of the top cover to separate it from the computer base enclosure, and lift the top cover up and off the base.

    • 9). Remove the two motherboard screws from the rear panel. One screw is to the right of the modem jack, and the other is left of the USB ports. Remove the three screws from the top of the motherboard. There is one in each rear corner and one in the center. Grasp the motherboard near the media bay connector and lift it up so it's at a 45-degree angle. Pull the board out of the case.

Lay the motherboard face down with the rear facing you. Pull the fan cable straight up to disconnect it from the board. Flip the board over, remove the three fan screws and remove the fan from the heat sink. Remove the six Phillips screws from around the edges of the CPU bracket and heat sink and lift the bracket off the motherboard. The heat sink will remain on the table when you pick up the motherboard.
