Tetbury is a small Cotswolds market town of some architectural renown.
In 1971 it was designated as an outstanding conservation area and its well-preserved 17th century buildings during the height of the town's prosperity when the town flourished in the wool trade.
Probably its most famous building is the Market House, a distinctive building fronted by a row of pillars.
Built in 1655 it is the best surviving example of a pillared building of its kind in England.
Today it is still used as a market place.
The Chipping, which used to be the town's market place originally, has since been turned into a car park.
The Chipping Steps, a cobbled medieval lane consisting of three flights and steps, lead down from the car park, taking you to Horsepool Bottom.
High above the town the Church of St Mary's, a Gothic style Church towers over the town.
Its tall spire, the fourth tallest in England, reaches into the sky adding to its height.
The church was built on the site of an old medieval church, and, rather curiously, you can still see its remains in the passages.
Tetbury has a formidable number of top quality antique shops, so if this is your favourite pastime you are unlikely to progress further than Long Street, where many of the town's 25 or so antique shops are situated.
Long Street has some really grand buildings and exudes an air of affluence, perhaps due in part to its royal connections.
Highgrove House, residence of HRH Prince Charles, is near the town and many of the local shops display the 'Prince of Wales' feathers.
You are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat, with a range of first class eating places abounding in the area.
The Trouble House Pub is the only pub to have had its own railway station at Trouble House Halt, which was in operation from the late 1950s to the early 1960s.
If you like stately homes, then Chavenage House is only a couple of miles from Tetbury.
This Elizabethan stately home was visited by Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War, when it is said that he persuaded the owner to vote for the king's impeachment.
The house has many treasures including rare tapestries and guided tours are available.
The Forestry commission's Westonbirt Arboretum is also nearby and has 600 acres of exotic trees, stately avenues and footpaths for you to wander at your leisure.
If you get the chance, don't miss the annual Woolsack races, which have taken place each Whitsun since the Middle Ages.
A riotous event where teams of opponents struggle up the steep Gumstool Hill with sacks of wool on their shoulders.
Gumstool Hill takes is named after the ducking stool which was used for ducking fraudulent traders in bygone times.
Tetbury is a great place to base your stay in the Cotswolds, as you can easily explore from here all the best things that this lovely part of England has to offer.
There is a choice of good hotels and also self catering holiday cottages available.
