Shopping for organic food has never been easier and many stores now stock a wide range of organic produce. There are several advantages to choosing organic products and an increasing number of people are making the decision to go for an organic option wherever possible. One product that you can now find on the shelves of many stores is the organic egg.

Why choose organic eggs?

Eggs are packed with nutrients, including vitamins A, D and B12. However, it may surprise you to learn that organic eggs have been shown to have 25% less saturated fat and 33% less cholesterol than non-organic eggs; and that's not all! Organic eggs also have twice the amount of omega-3 fatty acids, 66% more vitamin A and 3 times more vitamin E than their non-organic counterparts. Add to this the fact that eating organic eggs is believed to significantly reduce your likelihood of being affected by a number of different illnesses, and you have a number of extremely good reasons for choosing the organic eggs option.

The term "organic" refers to the conditions that the birds have been kept in, as well as the type of bird feed that has been used. Where many birds are kept in very cramped conditions, or even caged, the hens used to produce organic eggs will have had the freedom to roam. They will also have been fed on bird-feed that is not genetically modified and has no artificial coloring. This is evident in the difference in coloring of organic eggs and non-organic eggs.

Buying organic eggs

There are a number of possibilities when it comes to buying organic eggs. You'll find that many supermarkets now stock organic eggs as part of their organic eggs range. You can often find organic eggs in smaller stores such as the delicatessen and even in many of the markets where food is sold.
It's often possible to buy organic eggs direct from source. If there's a farm near you, check whether they supply organic eggs direct to the public as many of them do. It's also worth asking your milkman about organic eggs when he delivers your milk; you may be able to arrange to have your organic eggs delivered too!

Possibly the most exciting way to get your hands on some organic eggs is to have your own chicken coop. For a small initial investment, you could have your own supply of organic eggs right on your doorstep! Building a chicken coop is relatively simple and you'll find you can readily download plans and instructions online. If you're not too keen on DIY, think about buying a ready made coop to start your organic eggs collection.

However you decide to source your organic eggs, one thing's for sure; once you've gone organic, you won't go back.
