How to Install a Metal Ridge Vent
- 1). Remove the cap shingles from the ridge of your home's roof with a claw hammer and a flat bar. The cap shingles will not remove easily, as they are held to the roof with roofing cement. Do not attempt to reuse the old cap shingles, as the shingles will have been damaged from the removal process.
- 2). Read the installation manual that arrived with your metal ridge vent(s) to determine the opening required for the ridge vent to circulate air correctly.
- 3). Measure down both sides of your roof's ridge the amount required by the metal ridge vent installation instructions with the tape measure and mark the lengths with the carpenter's pencil. You will need to place marks at both ends of the ridge vent. When you are done marking the cuts, you should have two marks on either side of the roof's peak.
- 4). Snap a chalk line between the two length marks you placed on one side of the roofs ridge. Repeat the process on the other side of the roof's ridge to give you two cut lines.
- 5). Put on your safety glasses.
- 6). Cut along the chalk lines you laid on the roof in step four with the circular saw. If you are cutting through asphalt shingles, you may need to unclog the demolition blade by soaking the blade with mineral spirits and wiping with a clean rag.
- 7). Remove the cut pieces of roof sheathing with a claw hammer and a flat bar.
- 8). Place the metal ridge vent over the opening you made in the ridge. Cut the metal ridge vent to length if needed with the aviation snips.
- 9). Secure the metal ridge vent by running roofing nails through the metal ridge vent and into the sheathing of your roof, spaced according the installation instructions shipped with the metal ridge vent.
- 10
Cut the tube of polyurethane sealant with the cutter of the drop-in caulk gun and place the open tube into the drop-in caulk gun. - 11
Apply the polyurethane sealant to each roofing nail you ran through the metal ridge vent and areas specified by the metal ridge vent manufacturer. - 12
Coat the metal ridge vent with roofing cement and place the new cap shingles over the metal ridge vent to complete the installation.
