Keeping a bucket near by to store the waste from your kitchen can simply be done with a five gallon pail and lid.
If you don't already have one on hand, they can be purchased at most hardware stores.
One with a secure lid is very important if you don't want the odors to escape when keeping it in the house or for pests to find it when it is left outdoors by your backdoor.
Fruit flies or gnats can be a problem when storing kitchen waste.
There are a couple of simple ways to prevent them from getting out of hand.
One is to line the cover of the pail with news paper, this can also stop odors from escaping.
Another way is to keep a small bucket handy nearby with some finished compost, sawdust or even some good healthy garden soil and sprinkle it on the top of the newly added scraps you put in your scrap bucket.
Adding these organic materials to the pail will also help breakdown the scrapes.
If you don't want to use a plain five gallon bucket, there are compost storage containers that are made just for the purpose of storing kitchen organic waste materials for composting.
They come in many attractive styles and some even have a filter in the lid to prevent odors from escaping.
They also come in a variety of sizes to fit your needs.
Start composting your kitchen scrapes and return the beneficial nutrients back into the soil for your plants.
