    Misconceptions

    • A VGA-to-HDMI cable does not increase resolution. A VGA connection does not offer the bandwidth or capability and is an older standard of connecting monitors to computers. HDMI provides an interference-free digital connection and is now the standard for new monitors and computers.

    Function

    • The function of a VGA-to-HDMI cable is to adapt a computer without an HDMI port to a modern monitor that only has HDMI outputs. It is not meant to increase resolution, but instead to allow someone with an older computer to use a newer monitor until a real solution is found.

    Significance

    • With the advent of the HDMI cable, many monitors went from analog-based VGA connectors to digital connectors. As of 2011, HDMI is the standard for all computer monitor connections. Most computers, however, come with VGA connectors standard.
