How to Convert a Split Level Basement Into an Apartment

    • 1). First, if there is no bathroom in the basement, locate a bathroom on the upper level and plan to install the basement bathroom directly beneath it. The required plumbing is easier to install if the required pipes and drainage already exist in the vicinity. Call in a professional to do the work, however; DIY installation of an entire bathroom leaves a lot of room for critical error.

    • 2). There is likely no kitchen in the split level basement, so chose an area that is convenient and preferably in a corner of the basement to install one. A stove, sink and a small amount of counter space are all that is required for a small apartment-style kitchen. Call in a professional to build the kitchen.

    • 3). Use room dividers, such shoji screens, to section off a bedroom. For some split-level basements, this can simply be the upper level, or the above-ground portion of the basement.

    • 4). The apartment now has a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and living area. If there is space for more rooms, section them off with room dividers as well.

    • 5). Lay rugs in the bedroom and living area. This helps define a room in a large open space.

    • 6). Add some furniture, lighting and perhaps some wall decor, and the split-level basement apartment is ready to be lived in.
