How to Sharpen Stump Grinder Bits
- 1). Remove any of the teeth (or all) from your stump grinder. Depending on the make and model of your grinder, individual grinder bit removal will vary. Refer to your owner's manual for exact instructions on how to do so.
- 2). Install your diamond grinder wheel (if necessary) and don your safety equipment.
- 3). Set the tool rest at a height that allows for pressing each bit into the wheel with the tip facing up. This will prove useful when sharpening for the proper angle.
- 4). Press each stump bit into the wheel with the carbide portion of the grinder bit facing upward (or towards the ceiling).
- 5). Move the stump grinder bit back and forth while pressed against your wheel. This allows for an even sharpening and prevents excess wear on the sharpening wheel.
- 6). In between bits, spray down your wheel with water from the bottle. Heat is a diamond grinder's worst enemy, so cooling it down in between each bit will prevent overheating, as well as damage to your grinder bits and the wheel itself.
