How to Decorate Jars for Canisters

    The Lids

    • 1). Trace an outline of the lid on a piece of paper. Measure 1 inch or more around the outline to allow the fabric you will use to form a ruffle around the lid.

    • 2). Cut the lid shape from fabric of your choice. Use regular scissors, pinking shears or scalloped-edge scissors to create a more decorative lid.

    • 3). Glue the fabric to the top of the lid. If you think you will change the fabric to decorate your canisters for holidays, you can simply tear off the fabric and add a new piece with Christmas or autumn colors.

    • 4). Tie a ribbon, raffia or a fabric strip around the lid, either with or without a bow. Since you will tie the ribbon or fabric tightly, you do not need to glue it onto the lid, but doing so will ensure that it won't slip or get loose.

    The Jars

    • 1). Write the name of the jar's ingredient on a sticky label for the front of the jar. Buy labels already decorated, or add your own drawings or graphic designs. You will always recognize flour and sugar, but you may forget which jar holds faro and which has kasha.

    • 2). Glue fabric around the entire jar. This optional step allows you to decorate your jars in hundreds of ways, depending on the fabric you choose. Pick vinyl fabric to allow for easy cleaning.

    • 3). Wrap yarn or heavy twine around the jar, gluing as you go, for another optional decorative treatment. You'll find heavy twine in craft stores in a wide variety of colors.
