    • 1). Ensure that your HP Pavilion DV1000 laptop's battery is in working order. Batteries on laptops deteriorate over time, and yours may need to be replaced. Shut down the HP computer, disconnect the power cord from the back of the unit. Flip the Pavilion over to access the battery.

    • 2). Look along the top of the HP Pavilion DV1000 laptop's underside for the outline of the black, horizontal battery. Directly below this and slightly left of center, will be a single, sliding release button for the battery. Slide this button to the right to pop out the battery for replacement, then push the new HP Pavilion DV1000 battery in until it snaps into place.

    • 3). Turn the HP laptop back over and open it up so the screen is facing you. If the screen is still not operational and appears black, you may have backlight failure. Power down the HP laptop and remove the battery.

    • 4). Look along the perimeter of the display for screw caps. These plastic caps are circular in shape, and there will be four on top of the bezel and one on each of the bottom corners -- for a total of six caps. Remove these using the edge of a flat-head screwdriver as a wedging tool.

    • 5). Remove the screws under the HP Pavilion DV1000 laptop's screw caps using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 6). Use your fingers to create separation between the screen bezel and display cover, and pry away the bezel until you have it entirely removed.

    • 7). Look at the bottom of the HP Pavilion DV1000 laptop's monitor now that the bezel is gone. You will see the horizontal inverter board here. Ensure that the two cables on either side of the inverter board are connected into the connectors. If they are not, lift up on the side of each connector, slide the cables back in, and then press down on the connectors to reset them in place. This will restore the backlight of the HP Pavilion DV1000 laptop.

    • 8). Remove the inverter board if the inverter cable fix does not work. There is one visible screw holding the inverter board in place. Remove this using your Philips-head screwdriver, and then set the inverter board aside.

    • 9). Remove the screws holding the display hinges in place. There is one display hinge on either side of the bottom of the monitor, and each hinge has two screws holding it down. Remove these screws using the Phillips-head screwdriver.

Pull the now loose HP Pavilion screen away from the back casing of the monitor. On the back of the screen you will see a wide, flat gray LCD cable that should be held in place on a connector with a piece of clear adhesive. If it is loose from this connector, plug it back in.

Put the screen on the HP Pavilion DV1000 laptop back into place, replace the display hinge screws, and slide the inverter board and its screw back into place.

Reset the HP Pavilion DV1000 laptop's bezel and put all six screws back into place. Replace the battery. The monitor should now be operational.
