What Exactly Is Visual Journalism, Anyways?

Even with the decline of the printed word in the past few years thanks to the rise of Internet content providers, most people understand journalism to be the ethical and supposedly unbiased reporting of facts in printed or broadcast format in a manner that makes logical sense and contains an introduction as well as a conclusion. But what, many ask, is visual journalism? Isnt all journalism visual, in the sense that you have to watch TV or read a magazine or newspaper to learn what the article contains? And while well agree that radio news from sources like NPR isnt visual per se, you still have to see to be able to tune the dial and find your station, so theres a visual component there as well! Okay, okay, were stretching on that one a bit.

True visual journalism involves the use of multiple images to capture and convey a story on an issue or an event that has significance to a population group. The old adage, a pictures worth a thousand words, perfectly sums up visual journalism, or photojournalism, as it has been called in the past. Due to the increasing use of graphics, film, digital files and the explosion of websites as communication tools, photojournalism does not completely sum up the state of visual journalism in the 21st century, so the broader term visual sometimes replaces photo for those studying or working in the field of journalism in many parts of the world.
