What"s For Christmas This Year?

It's a problem I know a lot of people are facing this year, in these hard economic times.
My son is 10 and the baby is 1.
She will be happy with an empty box and wrapping paper.
My son on the other hand has already come to know and love the toys under the tree on Christmas morning.
I have always done my best to teach him the true meaning of Christmas.
This year, he may have a school of hard knocks, in learning the true spirit of giving rather than receiving.
I still have faith, that perhaps our bonuses will not be cut at work, even though we have been told otherwise.
I have faith that dad will have a job opportunity come through soon also.
I have not given up all hope.
But I do believe that what is meant to be will be and God has a plan for us.
The meaning of the season after all is not about shopping and toys and all of these commercial things.
With that said, God does understand that we want to give our children the best.
If things do not come through I will continue believing that the best, is for my son to learn that happiness is not in material things.
If he can learn that now, wouldn't that be a wonderful thing to have in his pocket for the rest of his life? I have already prepared him by letting him know that this year the XBox 360 he has his eye on, is probably not going to happen.
During our conversation I let him know that he already has so many other gaming systems, why does he need another.
Wouldn't it be better for us to save money so we can buy a house big enough that his step-brother can also fit and move in with us? Four of us are cramped in a 850 square foot condo.
While I am thankful for the low affordable mortgage, wouldn't it be better, for all of us, to have more space? He was resistant at first and stated, "no I want the Xbox instead".
For a few weeks I let it settle and resonate.
Just a couple of days ago he came to me and said, "mom, a house would be better than an Xbox, you are right.
" Now because he is such a great kid and has realized that material things is not what matters, I would love to be able to provide him with some toys to reward him for his awesome insight at the young age of 10.
In the meantime I am going to come up with ways to celebrate minus the present's and let the spirit lead us.
We live in Florida so there are a lot of free, wonderful light displays to make up for the fact we don't get snow!! I think we will take an evening and check them out and have hot cocoa.
Maybe another night, we can make Christmas cookies and sing carols.
We will read the story of Jesus's birth in the bible and remember he is the reason for the season.
Who knows, maybe, just maybe a child's Christmas dream will come true.
Perhaps I will sell some things on my website for once and all this writing will not just be a hobby.
We are going to find the meaning of Christmas and have the spirit with or without the material "stuff".
May your Christmas be filled with the same! Merry Christmas with Peace, Love and Joy!
