Parent Involvement

A parent is the most important influence in a child's life. Parent involvement is a significant positive influence on a child's achievement and shapes a child's development and future success. Children who parents are actively involved in their child's school tend to have higher grades, graduate at a higher rate, have good behavior and receive higher test scores.

Parent involvement builds a relationship with the teachers and administrators. Parents learn how to communicate with their child's teacher effectively. Good communication with teachers and administrators will benefit you and your child in their education.

Child care providers and educators should promote family involvement. Child care facilities have to give parents opportunities and support they need to be involved. Parents have to feel comfortable in the environment to effectively be involved. Teachers have an important role in getting parents involved. Teachers need to provide an inviting environment. If a parent does not feel comfortable they will not be involved. Involvement of a parent helps with communication necessary for childcare teachers to understand parents need and concerns.

There are different factors that could be a discouragement for a parent to be involved. Many parents don't have time, they have younger children, or they don't feel comfortable in the environment. We as educators can help with the factors that keep parents from being involved. We should schedule events after hours so parents won't have to leave work early. We should do the event for more than one day so the parent can choose the day that is more convenient for them and we should always schedule onsite childcare for the parents during events at the facility. When our parents are comfortable in their surroundings and have all these factors met they will be more apt to be involved in there child's education.

Communicating with your parents is a sure way to know what your parent wants and needs. When you know the wants and needs of your parents then you have a better chance in getting them involved. Parents are important in the molding of the children. Be involved in your child's education so they can have the foundation that is needed to be a successful student. When new families enter your facility always talk about how are parents get involved in the day to day functions of the facility. When families are invited at the beginning to be involved they feel as if you want them to be a part of their child's education.
