How to Plant Seeds From Heliconias
- 1). Soak the Heliconia seed in water for 5 days, changing the water daily.
- 2). Fill the tray with the soil and soak with water. Allow it to drain for at least 15 minutes.
- 3). Plant the seed, with the white tip pointing up. Cover with a very thin layer of soil.
- 4). Place the tray in the plastic bag and use the twist tie to close the bag. Place the tray in a warm (ideally at least 70 degrees F), dark area.
- 5). Check the seed periodically to make sure that the soil stays moist, but not wet. Heliconia are notoriously slow germinating plants and could take from 1 to 10 months, or longer depending on the variety, to germinate.
- 6). Remove the plastic bag as soon as the seed sprouts. Place it in an area with light, but not direct sunlight. Maintain a moist, not wet, soil. When the seedling has its second set of leaves it is ready to be transplanted.
