Peyton Manning Rookie Card Checklist
Do you have a Peyton Manning rookie card? If you do, you're certainly not alone. Roughly 40 different kinds were made by various sports card companies in 1998.
When you're one of the best NFL quarterbacks of your generation, not to mention one of the most visible players off the field thanks to a steady stream of endorsements, football card collectors know all about you.
That's certainly true for Indianapolis Colts superstar Peyton Manning, whose cards have always been popular.
Yet the feeling remains that they could be even hotter if he could transcend his regular season success and shake the "can't win the big game" label that's dogged him ever since his college days at Tennessee.
Manning's career stats - approaching 40,000 yards passing and 300 touchdowns at the end of 2006 - have probably already locked up a spot in Canton when his playing days end. His football cards could one day achieve similar status with more pressure performances like the one he turned in against New England in the 2006 AFC Championship Game, when he rallied his team from an 18-point deficit to pull out a dramatic 38-34 victory.
Entering the NFL in 1998, right before more limited rookie cards became all the rage, most of Manning's first year cards are not as difficult to find or as expensive as one might expect. His most sought after rookie is his 1998 SP Authentic, a card that could top $1000 in book value if he ever adds that elusive Super Bowl ring to his resume.
Also of his note is his 1998 Playoff Contenders Ticket #87.
Easily his most valuable rookie year offering, it is autographed and numbered to just 200 copies. But because of the way that set was organized, it does not fit the commonly accepted definition of a rookie card and is not included on this list.
