      The terms "research" and "evaluation" are frequently used interchangeably to describe the same action; however they each have a distinct definition. Research defines the process of acquiring information or knowledge while evaluation refers to the interpretation or assessment of the information received. Although they have separate definitions, there are also commonalities between research and evaluation.

    Purpose

    • Research and evaluation have a common purpose: to increase our knowledge base of a particular topic.

    Methods

    • Research and evaluation processes both involve the collection of information through previously published articles, interviews, written surveys and personal observation.

    Results

    • Research and evaluation both reveal strengths and weaknesses related to the topic being assessed. This information leads to improvements and the development of goals.
