How to Rig Your Line for Freshwater Fishing

    • 1). Attach a lure or hook to the end of your monofilament line with a Palomar knot. Form the knot be feeding several inches of line through the eye of the hook or lure.

    • 2). Form a loop by turning the free end of the line back and feed it once again through the eye. Pull the free end of the line alongside the main line to form a double line. Adjust the line so that the loop is about 3 inches long and there is 3 to 4 inches of the free end of the line alongside the main line.

    • 3). Tie an overhand knot with the loop and doubled line. Pull the loop through the overhand knot but do not pull tight. Pull the loop down and over the bend of the hook or around the lure. Hold the lure or hook with one hand and slowly tighten the knot by pulling on the doubled line.

    • 4). Continue rigging the line with a weight and float, if desired, by cutting the line 15 to 18 inches above the end. A weight and float will typically be used with a hook rather than a lure.

    • 5). Slide a bead, float, slip weight and another bead onto the main line in that order. Attach a barrel swivel to the end of the main line with an improved clinch knot. Form the knot by feeding 5 to 6 inches of line through the eye of the swivel.

    • 6). Wrap the free end around the main line for six to seven turns. This will form a small loop above the eye of the swivel. Begin forming the turns near the eye and work your way up the line.

    • 7). Turn the free end down and pass it through the small loop formed above the eye. Pull the line through, but not tight, and then pass the free end through the larger loop to the side. The larger loop was formed when the free end was turned down to the small loop above the eye.

    • 8). Peg the top bead in place on the line with a toothpick. Determine how deep you want the hook to go in the water. The float will slide up the line once it is in the water and stop against the pegged bead and suspend the hook below.
