How to Match a Tie to a Shirt
- 1). Go mono in your combo. This might just be the easiest, and least utilized, shirt and tie combination around. The whole monochromatic look, namely if you stay within the same designer, can offer an extremely sharp and smart option for men. Most designers will work, sometimes a few years in a row, within the same color palette for their collections, making it fairly effortless to pick up a solid shirt and a solid tie of the exact same color.
- 2). Build on a brand. This idea basically plays off the prior suggestion in its inspiration. Many of the designers designing menswear today have created their collections to go together. Makes sense, right? When you pick up any dress shirt by any given designer you’ll be hard pressed to find a tie, if not two, three or four, that wasn’t made to go with it. Choose a designer you like; then shop within his (or her) brand for a match.
- 3). Pick a color, any color. All you really need to do is find a tie that has within it the same color, be it a swirl, a check or a stripe, of the shirt to which you are trying to match. Even when you’re not shopping within the same brand name, you should be able to find a tie that has a similar hue to your shirt.
- 4). Don stripe on stripe. It may sound a little unconventional, but that’s the whole point. As long as the stripes are of different widths or sizes and are running in different directions, you can really, in the words of Tim Gunn, “make it work.” Of course, you’ll still need to draw on the point above, but stripes together can be very fashionable and quite tasteful.
- 5). Work with contrasts. Many times, when you juxtapose with light against dark or dark against light, you can really make the tie pop, and create a very fashion-forward look. This idea of contrast often works with color. By pairing colors on the opposite sides of a color wheel, you can create a very bold and crisp style.
