Eligibility

• In order to attend a state-approved training academy, all participants must be employed by a county sheriff's department or by a city police organization in Illinois. In most cases, the department will hire an officer and then pay for training at the academy as part of the employee's compensation package.
  
  

Basic Training

• The required basic training for new law enforcement officers focuses on physical training, vehicle codes, criminal offenses, firearms, civil rights and civil liability and law enforcement driving. Participants are tested based on written examinations, classroom participation and field practice performance.
  
  

Continued Education

• Officers seeking advancement or proficiency in specialized areas can participate in additional training offered by the state of Illinois. These training courses cover practical knowledge of crime investigations, breath alcohol testing, control and arrest tactics, critical incident response, emergency vehicle operation, drug enforcement and vehicle dynamics.
  
  

Certification

• All Illinois law enforcement training sessions offer certifications. In order to certify as a law enforcement officer during basic training, participants must achieve a score of 70 percent on written examinations and must also demonstrate proficient skills during field training. Officers completing advanced and specialized courses must demonstrate proficient skills during field exercises.
  
  

Enrollment

• Basic law enforcement training programs in Illinois are often limited to 40 participants. The enrollment cap ensures that each officer receives specialized attention during the intense, 480-hour training program. Enrollment for refresher and specialized courses for certified officers vary from six to 24 participants.
