Using the Phone Book

• 1). Obtain a local phone book to find a phone number. To look up a business you can look in the yellow page section of the phone book; some phone books also have business white pages. To look up a personal phone number, you will look in the white pages.
  
  
• 2). Flip open the book to the white pages to search for a personal phone number. Numbers are listed in alphabetical order by last name. Using the last name of the person for whom you wish to obtain a number, find the correct area of the phone book. Oftentimes there are several listings for the same name; locate the first name and/or address of the person whose phone number you are looking for. Immediately to the right of the name and address is the phone number.
  
  
• 3). Open the phone book to the yellow pages to look up a business number. Businesses are listed in alphabetical order by type. If you are looking up a restaurant phone number, you must locate the restaurant section and find the name of the restaurant in alphabetical order. If your phone book has business white pages, you also can look up a business in the same way you would search for a residential phone number.
  
  

Calling 411

• 1). Dial 4-1-1 from your landline or cell phone. This is the number to information, the number that allows you to locate phone numbers. Fees apply when calling 411 directory assistance, which are based on your phone service provider.
  
  
• 2). Provide the operator with the city and state of the person or business whose phone number you are looking up.
  
  
• 3). Give the operator the name of the person or business. The operator will provide an address to ensure this is the correct listing and then give you the number. Write down the number or push "1" on your phone to have a text message of the number sent to you; this only works if you are calling from your cell phone.
