How to Build a Homemade Log Splitter
- 1). Weld the frame together in a sawhorse shape, with two pairs of angled legs and a rectangular table on top. Give the length of the frame enough room for the cylinder and log to fit with a little room to spare. Weld the sheet metal to form the table surface.
- 2). Weld the wedge blade to one end of the steel pipe, and weld the other end of the beam to the frame. The blade should be vertically aligned. Position it so that when the piston is fully extended it cannot come in contact with the blade.
- 3). Weld the cylinder to the other end of the frame. The piston end of the cylinder should be pointed toward the blade.
- 4). Mount the engine and hydraulic pump to the frame. Make sure that all ports and wiring connections can be easily accessed.
- 5). Connect the hydraulic hoses to the input ports of the cylinder and the hydraulic pump using steel bracket clamps. Make sure to use the proper fittings. They should be rated for at least 50 percent more pressure than the pump can supply.
