    • 1). Place the tip of a measuring tape on the rear of an existing counter top or where it meets the wall. Stretch the measuring tape horizontally along the wall or cabinet to the opposite end of the counter top. Read the measurement in inches and write it down on paper with a pen. Continue measuring each section of counter top or cabinet and writing them down.

    • 2). Add all the length measurements together.

    • 3). Measure each portion of the counter top that will not need Formica due to freestanding appliances. For example, a freestanding range is generally 30 inches wide. Measure the horizontal width of the spaces for ranges and refrigerators and write them down in inches.

    • 4). Add the appliance width areas together. Subtract the appliance areas from the counter top areas. Divide this total by 12 to convert linear inches to feet. Round the number up to the nearest foot. For example, if the linear distance totals 410 inches and you subtract the appliance areas of 30 inches you get 380 inches. Divide 380 by 12 to convert it to 31.67 feet and round this number up to 32 linear feet needed to cover the counter tops or cabinets.

    • 5). Measure the depth of your counter tops, including the front roll, the flat portion and the backsplash. Purchase Formica sheets in the depth that is next larger than your depth measurement and includes your linear footage calculation.
