How to Use Malathion for Garden Termite Control
- 1). Inspect your property for termites. Termites prefer to feed on damp wood, so look for decaying wood around areas that retain moisture. Tap on wood structures and look for wood debris. Wood infested with termites will have a hollow sound when tapped with a solid object. Mud tubes on the surface of structures is another sign of termites.
- 2). Load a pesticide sprayer with malathion, which is an organophosphate insecticide that disrupts a termite's nervous system. Harmless to humans in small doses, malathion exposure should be restricted by wearing protective gloves and a ventilation mask during application.
- 3). Apply malathion only in areas where termite infestations have been identified. Follow the manufacturers instructions for application specifics. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, malathion also is toxic to beneficial garden insects, and overuse may result in other pest problems. Consequently, use malathion sparingly to treat termite infestations.
- 4). Monitor the infested area for continued termite activity, and re-apply malathion as needed.
