Spirituality and Health Links
People don't normally think of health and spirituality going together,which is more to do with a misunderstanding of both terms, rather than a reality of the truth which is that both terms are very much linked to each other.
Trying to define the term health is even more difficult than trying to define the term spirituality, but for the purposes of this article, lets say health is really referring to mental health, another taboo, and in particular an individuals mental health in the sense of normal development, ie how a healthy integrated adult would see themselves in terms of a healthy self image, and how they relate to the world accordingly.
Mental health is pretty much about our sense of self, how we see the world,and how we view others in that context.
A healthy self image will allow us to see others in a healthy loving light, whilst an unhealthy self image will mean we see other people in an equally opposite, unhealthy light.
Spirituality is equally hard to define, but for the purposes of this article, lets keep it about a sense of self.
Once an individual is tuned in to the idea of a sense of self, then it becomes much more likely and realistic they will start questioning their own self image, and how they relate to the world accordingly.
The key to linking spirituality and health or mental health is understanding thats it all really about a sense of self or self image.
How people see themselves, either in a healthy or unhealthy way pretty much determines how they relate to the world an other people in it.
This key factor is really about self-acceptance or love of self.
Its a pretty clear tenet of Christianity that you can only really love other people if you love yourself, ant that you can only love yourself if you have a love of God in your life.
Obviously these things are open to wide interpretation, but the general drift is pretty sound.
Theres a saying about healthy body healthy mind.
Perhaps one could add, healthy mind, healthy spirit.
