From Goal Seeking to Goal Achieving - Part I
For a better understanding of the process of goal achieving, it is necessary to explain how the mind works and the role of the Belief System/Self-Image in the process.
The Self-Image The following quote by Dr.
Maxwell Maltz, Plastic Surgeon, motivational speaker and author, explains clearly the power of the self-image for the purpose of goal achieving.
The "self-image" is the key to human personality and human behavior.
Change the "self-image" and you change the personality and the behavior.
But more than this, the "self-image" sets the boundaries of individual accomplishment.
It defines what you can and cannot do.
Expand the self-image and you expand the "area of the possible.
" As you see, the self-image is determining factor for success and the reason why for some people, manifesting abundance, health and success seems so easy.
They just feel they are deserving of all these attributes.
Therefore, they attract them or create them effortlessly.
With a positive self-image you can change your behavior, personality and abilities.
But, when the self-image is discordant with the goals set, there is no will power or conscious thought that can positively change the reality, making success not proportionate to the amount of work of the individual but to the sense of self-worth.
Now, let's study the relationship between the self-image and the mind.
The Self-Image and the Mind The mind is divided in two parts, the conscious and subconscious mind.
The first constitutes the 12% of the total mind's capacity and it is in charge of the thoughts processes and actions that required our attention and intention.
It is the rational and logical part of the mind.
The subconscious mind on the other hand, is responsible by the 88% of the mind's capacity and controls the processes that don't need our conscious awareness to be performed, just like breathing.
It is also responsible for skills (driving) and habits and the creative part of the mind.
The subconscious mind stores every one of our experiences, the same experiences that define our self-image.
In the early childhood both, the perception of the individual and the perception of the reality of all authority sources, parents, caregivers, teachers, spiritual or religious leaders, etc.
, structure what is more commonly called the Belief System.
The belief system influences our thoughts, decisions and actions in response to our environment.
We can't accomplish a goal that requires a quality that we don't believe to possess.
In other words, we behave and feel according to the idea we hold of ourselves.
Every one of us creates the labels that describe our ability to master or the inability to perform properly and successfully in different areas and roles.
A simple example, when I go out to dinner with relatives or acquaintances, I frequently point out the fact that I can't see myself working as a waitress because I imagine that I would dump the food on the customers, mix up their orders or would not get them right at all.
Therefore, I don't even dare to think of that position as a job option.
I have dared to do instead, odd jobs like Blackjack dealer and a wide range of entrepreneurial ventures.
How the Mind Works All the new information the mind receive goes first to the conscious mind but to make this information permanent and available to use at all times, it must first go through our subconscious mind to be compared and sort out with the information already stored there.
Then, everything that doesn't match the new information is rejected by the mind.
This is a pivotal concept that gives us a new perspective.
Whenever we encounter a disagreement between the conscious and the subconscious mind, the last will most likely overpower the other.
As a result, working at altering the subconscious mind will yield long-term results versus doing it at the conscious level with the use of will power that will only get short-term results.
To illustrate, I am sure that for most of you readers, this is not the first article or program that you have had access to, that suggests a process for achieving success.
There are numerous authors, speakers and coaches out there that offer the same objective with different approaches, from positive affirmations to subliminal messages, to mention some.
For a very long time, I've been a fan of affirmations and I never understood why from time to time the affirmations seemed so powerful that my self-confidence skyrocketed to go back down later again.
It was not until I started working on uncovering and releasing the limiting beliefs rooted in the subconscious mind that I achieved lasting results.
For example, I've felt called to undertake the mission of sharing a meaningful message about stepping into our power, reconnecting with our divine self and aligning our lives to our soul's purpose but, I always had a sense of incompleteness derived by the negative belief, "I am unworthy.
" "I must have every piece of the puzzle in place in my own world before feeling that "I am competent and worthy," to take on such a magnificent calling.
So, before integrating the new belief (I am competent and worthy), I played small for a while, hid my gifts and talents and immersed myself in varied and multiple activities that distracted me from the soft whisper of my soul that kept calling me gently and persistently; and here I am today, stepping into my power and taking my message out to the world.
