How to Store Pumped Breast Milk

    • 1). Transfer breast milk to a clean, sterile plastic or glass bottle with a sealable top, or a sterile, sealable bag. Your manual or electric breast pump may come with pre-sterilized milk bags, or you can buy them from the pharmacy or supermarket. Put a label on each container recording when the milk was pumped.

    • 2). Store your breast milk in amounts that you use every day to reduce waste. If your baby drinks 4 to 6 ounces at each feeding, put 4 to 6 ounces of breast milk in each storage container. Leave an inch of space at the top of the container, as milk will expand slightly as it freezes.

    • 3). Place your breast milk at the back of your refrigerator. It will keep for around 3 days at a temperature of 32°-39° Fahrenheit (0°-3.9° Celsius).

    • 4). Freeze the milk if you are not going to use it in the next few days. Place it at the back of the freezer. It will keep for up to one month in a freezer compartment inside your refrigerator, or around three months in a self-contained freezer connected on top or at the side of your refrigerator (provided the temperature is maintained at 0° Fahrenheit (-18° Celsius). It will keep for up to one year in a deep freezer provided the temperature is kept at 4° Fahrenheit (-20° Celsius).
