How to Use a MagicJack When a Computer Crashes
- 1). Download the latest software update from Magicjack.com. If you've updated recently, it's possible the update is causing the problem. Uninstall the update, re-install the original software and wait until a new patch is released. To find out what software version you are running, navigate to "/Your_Username/.MagicJack/Softphone on your hard drive, right-click on "MagicJack.app" and click "Get Info."
- 2). Upgrade your operating system. MagicJack is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Intel-based Apple Macintosh computers. More crashes have been reported in earlier versions of Windows than on PCs with service packs installed. If you have Windows XP, use Windows Update to upgrade to Service Pack 2 or 3. With Windows Vista and Windows 7, you need Service Pack 1 or higher.
- 3). Update the USB drivers. MagicJack is a USB device and it relies on a working USB port. If the port drivers are out of date, you might see compatibility problems with the MagicJack, such as slow performance, error messages and crashes. Click the Windows “Start” button and go to "Control Panel," then "Hardware and Sound." Select “Device Manager” and click to expand "Universal Serial Bus Controllers." Right-click each USB device and select "Update Driver Software."
- 4). Plug the MagicJack adapter into an A/C powered USB hub to determine if your USB ports are bad. PC components are sensitive to static electricity but can also be damaged by a power surge. Faulty USB ports can produce crashes and error messages such as "A USB Device Has Exceeded the Power Limits of its Hub Port." An A/C-powered hub has its own power source in the event that your USB ports aren't providing enough power.
