What Causes Wrinkles?

In this article we will look at what are wrinkles, what causes wrinkles and what you can do to reduce the effect of wrinkles.

Everyone will have wrinkles eventually however there's no definitive age as to when you will start seeing wrinkles appearing on your face. Let's start at the beginning:

What are Wrinkles?

Wrinkles are more-pronounced lines, folds or creases in the skin. Most commonly wrinkles appear with age, however there are other factors that speed up the process of wrinkles (we will take a look at these a little later). With age, the skin becomes less elastic and thinner. In addition the production of natural oils is reduced leading to drier skin which causes sagging and wrinkling. In general the skin's ability to repair itself becomes diminished with age.

What Causes Wrinkles?

Age - the most common one (as talked above)
So apart from age, what causes wrinkles? Well let's take a look at some of the biggest culprits:

Exposure to Ultraviolet light - Evidence shows that people who spend more time in the sun are more prone to develop wrinkles prematurely. The sun dries out the skin meaning it loses its strength and flexibility, resulting in sagging skin.
People who tend to have hair covering their face or commonly wear hats are less likely to have wrinkles due to the blocking of the sun's UV rays. The same can be said for people who have indoor jobs; if you work outdoors everyday you are more prone to UV light.

Smoking - reduces the oxygen to the blood cells which impacts the nutrients to the skin.

Skin dehydration - not drinking enough water or drinking too much alcohol or coffee can severely dehydrate the skin causing it to become dry, which as we know causes sagging and wrinkling

Lack of proper sleep - sleep provides the body the necessary time to recover and repair itself. If you are not getting enough quality sleep then the skin cells do not repair themselves fast enough.

Genetics - genetics plays a big part in most things and there is some evidence to support that it also plays a part in wrinkles i.e. if your parents have them, then so will you.

Facial Expressions - if you repeatedly frown, squint or even smile then you are more prone to develop wrinkles. Each time you perform a facial expression it creates an indent in the skin. Each time the skin springs back into place. As you age, the elasticity becomes less effective and the €spring back into place' starts to dwindle, creating wrinkles.

Don't stop smiling please€¦.the world needs smiling faces!

So now we know what wrinkles are and what causes wrinkles, but how do we prevent them or treat them?

There are many ways to help or eliminate wrinkles from staying out of the sun and stop smoking to laser treatments. Also some of the best creams you can get over the counter.

Creams - stick with well known brands like Olay (my recommendation). Don't use products that you don't fully trust. Use as recommended on the bottle and start young if you can.

Treatments - there are tons about and it all depends on your budget. From Botox, to injecting fat from your thigh into your face, to cooling sprays, the options are out there for you.

Good luck to you all and HAPPY aging.
